Tinubu Sends NDLEA Reform, Safety Investigation Bills to Senate

President seeks legislative action on proposed changes to drug law enforcement and investigation of transport-related accidents

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded two legislative proposals to the Senate, seeking consideration of reforms relating to the operations of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the investigation of safety incidents.

The bills form part of the Federal Government’s legislative agenda aimed at strengthening institutional frameworks, improving public safety and enhancing the effectiveness of agencies responsible for enforcing the law and investigating incidents that threaten lives and property.

The proposed NDLEA legislation is expected to focus on the agency’s legal and operational framework for combating illicit drugs, while the safety investigation bill is intended to address the statutory arrangements governing the investigation of accidents and other safety-related occurrences.

The transmission of the bills to the National Assembly marks the beginning of the legislative process, during which senators are expected to examine their provisions, assess their implications and determine whether they should be passed into law.

The proposals will also provide an opportunity for lawmakers to consider whether existing legal frameworks adequately address emerging challenges in drug control, accident investigation, institutional accountability and the protection of the public.
