Edo Varsity Lecturer Dies After Hotel Encounter with Sex Worker

The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, with the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death now the subject of police investigation.

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman whom the police identified as a commercial sex worker.

The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, with the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death now the subject of police investigation.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident and disclosed that three persons had been arrested in connection with the death.

The police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a report concerning the incident at about 8pm on October 5, 2026.

According to her, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

Ikoedem said the lecturer subsequently sent the woman out to purchase water, but when she returned to the hotel room, she found him lying lifeless.

She said the hotel owner, the manager and the woman who was with the lecturer had been taken into custody as investigators sought to establish what happened before his death.

The police have not attributed the lecturer’s death to the sexual encounter, while the precise cause of death remains unknown.

Uwuigbe’s remains have reportedly been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.

The development has attracted attention in Ekpoma because of Uwuigbe’s position as a senior academic at one of Edo State’s major universities.

Confirming the deceased’s identity as a staff member of Ambrose Alli University, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, however, stressed that the incident did not occur on the university campus or in connection with the institution’s official activities.

He also clarified that the woman involved in the incident was not a student of the university.

The university spokesman described the circumstances as a private matter involving the deceased, noting that whatever happened took place outside the university environment.

The police investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events leading to Uwuigbe’s death, including what happened in the period between his arrival at the hotel and the discovery of his body.

Investigators are also expected to examine available evidence from the hotel and obtain medical findings that could help determine the actual cause of death.

The arrest of the hotel owner, manager and the woman is understood to be part of the ongoing investigation and does not in itself establish criminal responsibility.

Police authorities have yet to announce any conclusion regarding the circumstances of the lecturer’s death.
