Bandits Kill Five, Abduct Several as Fresh Attack Hits Sokoto Community

Five residents have been killed and several others abducted after suspected bandits launched a fresh attack on Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The latest assault occurred despite a security alert issued by the Sokoto State Police Command following intelligence indicating that suspected bandits were planning to attack communities in Kebbe LGA.
According to a report by Crisis Reporter in the North-West region, Bakastine, the attackers invaded Girkau and reportedly remained in the community for several hours, leaving residents trapped and with limited options for escape.
The attackers were said to have moved through parts of the community during the invasion, shooting at residents and carrying out a large-scale cattle rustling operation.
Five people were reportedly killed in the attack, while four others sustained injuries and were taken for medical attention.
The violence also spread to neighbouring settlements within Girkau Ward. One person was reportedly killed in Dukura, while another was killed in Jabga.
Two other residents were injured during the attacks, while a local vigilante was abducted by the assailants.
The attackers were also said to have seized the vigilante's locally made firearm before leaving the area.
The incident has heightened fears among residents of Kebbe LGA, where bandit activities have reportedly intensified in recent weeks.
The fresh attack is particularly troubling because it came after the police command had raised an alert over intelligence suggesting that armed groups were preparing to strike communities in the local government area.
Residents had consequently been placed on heightened alert, but the prolonged presence of the attackers inside Girkau has raised fresh questions about the ability of security forces to prevent attacks after receiving advance intelligence.
The development also comes against the backdrop of an earlier threat by suspected bandits against Kebbe town.
It had been reported that the bandits demanded a N40 million levy from residents and threatened to attack the town if the money was not paid.
The latest killings and abductions have now intensified concerns that the threats may be part of a broader campaign by criminal groups to establish control over communities in the area, extort residents and seize livestock.
The rustling of a large number of cattle during the latest attack is also expected to worsen the economic pressure on residents, many of whom depend on farming and livestock for their livelihoods.
The renewed violence has left communities in the affected area facing growing uncertainty, with residents increasingly concerned about their safety, movement and ability to carry out their daily economic activities.
As of the time of the report, there was no detailed official statement from the Sokoto State Police Command confirming the full casualty figure, number of abducted residents or the extent of the cattle rustled during the attack.
The latest incident adds to the growing security challenges confronting parts of Sokoto and the wider North-West, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, killings and livestock rustling have continued to threaten rural communities.
